This month's energy tip: Due to Hurricane Katrina's likely impact on
winter natural gas rates, the Georgia Public Service Commission
recommends conserving energy, locking in a fixed rate, and applying for
needed energy assistance from Georgia LIHEAP at 404-320-0166.

Natural gas marketers quote only the gas rates, but your bill includes
customer service fees and other charges that add up. Be sure to compare
rates on an "Apples-to-Apples" basis, which includes everything on your
bill except taxes. Here are the "Apples-to-Apples" per-therm rates
offered by Georgia marketers this month:

1) blackEnergy ( www.blackenergy.com ): $2.40 Variable or $1.80 Fixed
2) Commerce Energy (877-226-5389): $2.55 Variable
3) Coweta-Fayette EMC (877-RING-EMC): $2.28 Variable or $1.76 Fixed
4) GasKey (877-GAS-1KEY): $2.45 Variable or $1.96 Fixed
5) Georgia Natural Gas (877-850-6200): $2.49 Variable or $1.83 Fixed
6) Infinite Energy (877-DIAL-IEI): $2.50 Variable or $1.80 Fixed
7) Scana Energy (877-GO-SCANA): $2.48 Variable or $1.83 Fixed
8) Shell Energy (877-67-SHELL): $2.52 Variable or $1.86 Fixed
9) Southern Company Gas (866-SOCO-GAS): $2.38 Variable or $1.83 Fixed
10) Vectren Source (866-200-5693): $2.29 Variable
11) Walton EMC (866-WEMC-GAS): $2.32 Variable or $1.69 Fixed

Contact your chosen marketer to sign up for a monthly variable rate or
one-year fixed rate. They'll order Atlanta Gas Light to transfer your
account, and you'll be switched to your new marketer on the 1st of next
month if you call by the 19th.

Already have. I'm set at $1.0190/therm till next May.
BTW, you might attract more white customers if you'd drop
the "black" part of the name. One has to question the intelligence
of people who try to appeal to a white market with such a name.

IM, you locked in a good rate. Those who are waiting it out with
variable rates are going to feel some pain this winter. And you might
be surprised at how many people who don't identify as Black still look
for easy ways to support Black communities. We welcome them. Thanks for
posting,

It appears that you're saying that blackEnergy is a social program
masquerading as a gas provider. Most white people have their hands
full supporting their own families without the added burden of
supporting "Black communities." Besides, most "full fare" taxpaying
whites feel that they support blacks quite enough already.
