Discussion:
GA Natural Gas Rates for April

This month's energy tip: To save on gasoline, replace your air and fuel
filter, get a tune up, get an alignment, balance and inflate your
tires, use air conditioning only above 40 mph, use cruise control on
the highway, accelerate and brake smoothly, and remove unnecessary
items from your trunk.

If you have an annual contract for natural gas and you don't check the
rates when you're eligible to switch, you could end up with a variable
rate that empties your pocket each month. Marketers quote only the gas
rates, but your bill includes customer service fees and other charges
that add up. Be sure to compare annual "Apples-to-Apples" rates, which
include everything but taxes.

As published by the PSC, here are the "Apples-to-Apples" rates (with
typical April bills) offered by Georgia marketers for annual contracts
signed this month:

1) Coweta-Fayette EMC (877-RINGEMC): $1.38/therm or $99.12
2) GasKey (877-GAS-1KEY): $1.48/therm or $106.25
3) Georgia Natural Gas (877-850-6200): $1.43/therm or $103.25
4) Infinite Energy (877-342-5434): $1.60/therm or $114.89
5) Scana Energy (877-GO-SCANA): $1.42/therm or $102.45
6) Shell Energy (877-67-SHELL): $1.47/therm or $105.53
7) Southern Company Gas (866-SOCO-GAS): $1.46/therm or $104.81
8) Vectren Source (866-200-5693): $1.49/therm or $106.97
9) Walton EMC (866-WEMCGAS): $1.43/therm or $102.52

To choose a new marketer, call them at the number above and sign up for
a one-year fixed rate. They will order Atlanta Gas Light to transfer
your account, and you will be switched to your new marketer on the 1st
of next month if you call by the 19th.

Thanks, NC. These rates are unbelievably high and climbing. Spring is
when we typically see a minor reduction, but there seems to be no place
to go but up. Let's hope for some sanity in these numbers next month.

Hi, Michael.

Your bill lists the fixed or variable rate you're paying just for the
gas. If you multiply that rate by the number of therms you used, you
get the natural gas charge on your bill. You also pay a customer
service charge, a pass-through charge for Atlanta Gas Light's services,
and taxes. Those extra charges work out to about $0.30 this month, so
you're actually paying closer to $1.20 per therm. The rates I list are
for a 12-month contract starting this month, and they include the
natural gas and all other charges except for taxes. That way, we can
more accurately compare all the fixed-rate contracts offered by natural
gas marketers.

As to why the rates are so high, you have to look at the wholesale
prices, and they are going through the roof. There's a lot of concern
about global oil reserves and the lack of new discoveries, which is
driving up the price. There's also the potential for further disruption
in Middle Eastern oil supplies, so speculators are adding a so-called
"war premium" to oil futures. The price of oil is increasing the demand
for natural gas as industrial users look for oil alternatives. Reduced
supplies mean increased costs. All in all, I think it's a risky time to
have a variable natural gas rate. Thanks for a good question.
